Notes on Grooming: A Post Saved from Being a “Thoughts I Couldn’t Flesh Out into Full Entries” by a Last-Minute Theme

Some reflections on the human body, and the care of it:

Nails: One of the joys of working with Meg is getting to know her family. I don’t remember if she told you about this, but during one of the early meetings we had for The Misanthrope’s Guide to Life (buy it buy it buy it buy it), my stay in Maryland included a McBlogger Sunday Family Dinner. I have never been more anxious about a meal. My family is small and scattered; we had holiday meals and someone-happens-to-be-in-town meals but not “family dinners.” The idea was straight-up exotic. I was extremely anxious that I wouldn’t “do it right” and Meg had to pull me into the other room and “soothe” me by slapping in the face, forcing a double shot of bourbon down my throat, and calling me a tittybaby. (It worked.) I managed not to fart or cry (audibly) during the meal, and calmed down enough to enjoy the food and the conversation, and then afterwards Meg and I had a talk about it:

Meg: Are you okay now? Did you manage family dinner?

Me: I did. It was… unusual.

Meg: Not really. We do this every Sunday.

Me: Are you kidding? What… how? What do you do?

Meg: Well, Diane cooks a meal, we all come over, and eat it while having a conversation.

Me: A conversation about what?

Meg: Our week…

Me: And everyone cares?

Meg: To an extent.

Me: That’s so weird.

Meg: Well, all right, you can write a post about how quaint and exotic my family’s custom of “Sunday dinner” is. Now, can we work on the book, or do you have more emotions about my family?

Me: I was thinking about your mother’s fingernails.

Meg: That’s healthy.

Me: Has she always had manicured nails?

Meg: I mean, she wasn’t born with them. That would have been uncomfortable for my grandmother. She tends to have nails.

Me: They’re amazing.

Meg: They’re fingernails.

Me: They’re so much more. Watch her gesture. They underline and emphasize every gesture. It’s art. She has ten points of color making her every gesture count, making every movement of her hands meaningful.

Meg: I’m going to call Stella and see if I can trade you and sixty dollars for David Wain.

Me: I wish I had nails. I feel like people would take me more seriously. I could tap on things.

Meg: Eighty dollars and the leftover gummy fangs. Quit acting so weird or you’ll bankrupt me on this trade.

Me: Michael Showalter would let me have nails.

Meg: Yes, because he’s meek. That’s why he always has to be the timid one in their sketches.

Me: I wouldn’t be meek if I had nails.

Meg: You’re not meek, you’re a dumbass.

Me: Evie has nails.

Meg: Evie also got spayed. Connect the dots here, Nancy.

Teeth: I skipped my last dentist appointment because I just couldn’t handle it that day. A friend had had a death in the family so we went out and got reeeeeeling drunk, and somehow I couldn’t handle being hungover and having a stranger look in my mouth, tsk at me, and say “Well, we’ll do what we can.” Two results from skipping this appointment:

1.) The dentist’s office won’t let me go quietly. They’ve called half a dozen times and mailed me an envelope full of pamphlets about gum disease. It’s so passive-aggressive, like the time I misremembered the time of a counseling appointment and got an email that said, “Chris, if you don’t want therapy anymore, please tell me so I can update my files.”

2.) I got a new “oral irrigator.” They’re essentially a cross between floss and a riot hose – a little machine that shoots out a fierce little jet of water which is used to BLAST food and bacteria out of your various mouth crannies. It’s my favorite toy for a lot of reasons:

A)   It makes a mess, and I take childish glee in that. Until I got used to it, every time I used it I had to take off my shirt and stand in the bathtub.

B)   It’s a wonderful fidget. Meg and I were working on a project recently and I just kept cleaning my teeth when I got stuck. The reservoir holds about forty seconds worth of water, which is about enough time for me to feel like I’ve taken a break and come back to writing refreshed.

C)   It’s “body karma.” You know how you make those break-even deals with God and your organs – “Well, I had boiled squash for lunch, so I can have the beer-battered beer with dinner. I can have martinis tonight if I eat the olives, which count as a vegetable. I went to yoga on Thursday, so I can spend Friday lying on the floor watching It’s Garry Shandling’s Show with my mouth slightly open. I’ll get stoned, but out of an apple bong, and then I’ll eat the apple for fiber.” Hopefully turbo-hydro-flossing will make up for menthol-cigarette-and-Diet-Rockstar-energy-drink-fueled night-writing.

D)   It actually feels really good and makes my breath LOLS FRESH.

Hair: I got a new, fairly drastic haircut. Those of you who have met me at reader functions or who remember the picture of me tasting the vaginal dye will recall my glorious, flowing locks. They’re gone: I accidentally caught some on my fork and got a tig ol’ bite of hair and chicken, and men working on the subway kept calling me “ma’am” and “sweetheart.” Ma’am I can almost handle, but sweetheart? My stubble is blond and a winter coat conceals my beer gut, Adam’s apple, and general titlessness, so I can imagine mistaking me for a woman at a quick glance, but not an attractive woman. So I got a haircut, and now I’m dreading going back to work. Every single person I work with will remark on it. They will mean well, and yet I will have to have six identical conversations about my haircut:

Person: You got a haircut!

Me: I did.

Person: It looks nice.

Me: Thank you.

Person: Why did you get a haircut?

Me: Some guy called me “sweetheart” at 69th Street Station and we both got really uncomfortable.

Person: Ah.

The hairdresser was pretty awesome. He had big gold jewelry with big stones in it and talked to me about my career to help me plan a haircut that “represented” me. I’m actually pretty relieved* with the result, even though it makes me look a little like my name is “Skeeter.” We had a long talk about Charlie Sheen.

Love to love you, dear readers.

*This says a lot about my feelings about my appearance. I don’t like or dislike a haircut, I automatically type relieved.

When was International Women's Day again?

UHHHH, not to call-out and alienate a dedicated reader, but Mike (not Mike-Mike; Mike from Des Moines-Mike) just sent me the most horrifying email I've ever received and I have to share.

Mike and I are usually both up at the same queer and ungodly hours because I'm writing and he's an insomniac, so occasionally we'll shoot emails back and forth. This is from tonight:

You won't believe the shit that went down in my gross anatomy lecture today my professor actually referenced Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Sex (But Were Afraid to Ask). In actuality we were talking about sex, reproduction, and I had to watch a lady give birth. FML. For real Meg seriously consider never doing that. This lady didn't even have a Brazilian before she let it be filmed so I think that really put her character into question. But my teacher was discussing the finer points of how far the penis can actual go in the cervix or whatever and some girl said "well thats not very deep what if i sleep with someone bigger then that" and he said "you know you should check out a book called 'everything you always wanted to know about sex "[...]
I................just have so many emotions:

1.) I just watched a video of a vaginal delivery on YouTube and I've never been so happy to be raggin' it in my entire life.

2.) Now I can't stop watching birthing
videos.

3.) I just tabbed over from a birthing video to type the above sentence and tabbed back just in time to see an episiotomy, and I
wish you could hear the noise I made. OH MY FUCKING GOD. TABBED BACK AGAIN AND THERE WAS A CLOSE UP. A CLOSE UP OF THE EPISIOTOMY. THE DOCTOR WAS JUST GOING TO TOWN WITH A PAIR OF SCISSORS LIKE SHE WAS A MEAGER YARD OF FABRIC AT JO-ANN'S.

I'm so sorry, I just got the shivers and 100% feel like I'm going to vomit.

4.) OK, I originally laughed at that YouTube comment, but honestly, Diane McBlogger: you are a sinner and a saint and God bless you for going through that to give me life. I'd like to think I was worth it, but then again, you automatically assumed I ate out of the trashcan a few weeks ago when I told you I got food poisoning, so, maybe not.

5.) One of the funniest things anyone ever told me about childbirth was courtesy of Rachel after she had her baby last summer. (Side note: not to get all Megan's Law on you, but Rachel and Eric's son, AJ, is adorable in a way that I don't know how to handle. And I'm not just saying that because they're my friends. I don't even like kids! They're perpetually covered in a fine layer of maple syrup and sawdust and make me heinously uncomfortable, but that child is uh-dorable. I really want to link to this video of him hysterically laughing in the bathtub that I've watched too many times for someone not in their family, but: a.) I can't find it on YouTube, and b.) I don't know if Rachel wants me linking a video of her nude child on a blog that featured anal sex and ass-fingering stills yesterday.) (Look at me, thinking before I act. Making mature decisions.
Well, I guess this is growing up...)

Anyway, after she had AJ, I sat her down and made her go into a gross amount of detail about what it was like to give birth. About halfway through, I asked her if it was awkward to be all beave to the wind for 18 hours, and she said the only part of the experience that made her bashful was how much you fart during childbi
rth.

"Yeah, but you're sitting there with a child dangling out of your bits—do you really care if you're farting at that point?" I asked her.

"Meghan, it was the
middle of the day. THE SUN WAS OUT. It was so mortifying! I couldn't stop apologizing!" she responded. This conversation happened at least eight months ago and it's still endlessly funny to me. I just love the concept of there being "farting hours" and those hours corresponding with the position of the sun, like some sort of ancient Aztec gassy ritual. I also enjoy the mental image of someone letting a fart slip out at 3 o'clock in the afternoon, awkwardly shifting their eyes around the room, and then being like, "WELP, IT'S FIVE O'CLOCK SOMEWHERE, AMIRITE?! HEY-O!!!!!" Ohhhhh, mercy...it's the little things that get me through the day.

5.) RE: the pubic hair comment: Oh,
I'M sorry, but if my vagina was about to be tarred and feathered and drawn and quartered and put in the microwave with a metal spoon and blown up, I think the last thing on my to-do list would be to get a bikini wax. Sorry that "puts my character into question", sir.

6.) Excuse me, but "HOW FAR A PENIS CAN GO INTO THE CERVIX"??? Why is
anything going into the cervix during sex?! Am I correct in thinking that that doesn't happen? I'm apprehensive to fully freak out about this and say it's 100% not physically possible becauze (<--- that was a typo, but my God do I wish that's how I spelled "because") I have a very medieval understanding of my genitals and reproductive organs and it's all just witchcraft and wizardry to me, so I suppose there's a .0000000001% chance that "cervix-fucking" is possible, but I'm leaning towards not. Also this just seems like one of those things I'd mock and make a big deal about, only to read 100 comments at the end of the day about how it's normal and I'm the weirdo for thinking otherwise. (See wiping sitting down, parasites, The Snuggie...) One time my sister made a passing reference to when a gentleman's junk hits your cervix during sex and I was like, "HA HAHAHAH, WHAT?!?! YOU FREAK OF NATURE! THAT DOESN'T HAPPEN! LOLOL!" and she gave me one of the most judgmental stares I've ever received and said, "Uh, yes it does. What kind of guys are you having sex with?" That shut me up pretty quickly. So I don't know! It's anyone's game! Maybe ladies all over the world play bumper cars with their cervixes every night and sometimes shit slips in and I'm the weird one with a Hogwarts grand hall of a vagina with rotating staircases that nobody will ever reach the end of, so don't listen to me.

...This blog post didn't really go where I thought it would, and yet, here we are. Hey. Happy Thursday.

Random Whatnot and...Stuff

1.) I really need to try harder with my blog post titles.

2.) UH, no big deal, but the "Soap" theme song is officially my new ringtone, courtesy of old fallin'-off-the-bed-'n-jackin'-up-her-back Ushma.

No voiceover. Strings. 15 seconds of pure magic on a loop. If I was an asshole about not answering my phone before, I'm on a whole other level now. All I do is lay around my apartment with my head in my hands, kicking my little legs back and forth in the air, just waiting for someone to call so I can not pick up and do the "Drop It Like It's Hot" .gif dance. I seriously considered tweeting my number so it would happen more often and I'm still not convinced it's not not a bad idea...

3.) OK, working part-time at the Pleasure Palace: BEST IDEA EVZ or WORST IDEA EVZ?!

PRO: I could walk to work

CON: ...

PRO: I'm an old pro at the retail game

CON: Retail money blows

PRO: Yeah, but it's better than nothing

CON: That's valid

PRO: Blog fodder out the ying-yang

CON: Yeah, but no taking pictures of people, and no naming names

PRO: Well, fucking obviously

CON: Oh,
I'M sorry, I'm not the one who got fired for blogging last year

PRO: Yeah you are. Technically.

CON: Point taken

PRO: The hours are
perfect

CON: Porn shop smell kind of gives me a headache

PRO: Breathe through your nose

CON: Everything might be covered in a thin layer of question mark

PRO: You finished your Gardasil series in 2009

CON: Did you know that cervical cancer can be caused by a virus?

PRO: Be one less. Tell a friend.

CON: Actually, now they're saying that shit is kind of dangerous

PRO: Well, fuck me

CON: Get back to pro/con-ing the job

PRO: Sorry

CON: Walking home from Georgetown to Dupont at 12:30 in the morning sounds slightly dangerous

PRO: So ride your bike. It's about to be the Spring! Perfect, crisp night-riding weather!

CON: That's actually a pretty good idea. OH, WAIT A MINUTE...

PRO: The ultimate trump card in the McBlogger Family Bike War of 2007—Present would be getting raped while walking home from work

CON: I mean, that's true...but I'd also have to get
raped...

PRO: Yeah, but you'd really prove a point

CON: Well, I do like doing that

PRO: Then it's settled

CON:
'Eh...you have to apply in person

PRO: That seems kind of confrontational

CON: HAHA, I know, right??

PRO: You really do need a job tho
ugh

CON: I don't know what all this you nonsense is. There's no "I" in "we".

PRO: That's not how that phrase goes

CON: This is so exhausting

FINAL SUMMATION: I don't know. Should I apply??

4.) Speaking of porn, I spent this past weekend at Chris' place in Philly and his floor was
saturated in nudie mags. It was so incredibly distracting. And not in like a "Ooo0o0o0o! This is so hot, I can't concentrate on my work!" kind of way, but more in a "Ow, that looks like it hurts, why is she so shiny?" kind of way. (Side note: if you ever want to derail a Meg/Chris writing session, give us porn, Silly Putty, and/or a YouTube video of Maya Angelou reciting "Phenomenal Woman" and we'll be DUNZO.) There is absolutely nothing sexy to me about still pornographic images. I mean, they're fascinating, yes, but not sexy. Mostly they just make me appreciate being a lady, because if I ever had to donate sperm in a clinic that only had adult magazines, I'd be fah-fah-fucked. I'd have to ask the nurse to come back in after an unproductive 30 minutes and be like, "Um, here's your Barely Legal back. I'll just take a copy of The Atlantic or something because I'm pretty sure I could work something out to that...Thanks."

Here are my two favorite images from the shag carpet of XXX literature that is Chris' floor (Oh! NSFW! Kind of. The floating Evie heads of censorship were 100% Chris' idea, but you're welcome nonetheless.):

I can't stop masturbating to this image and it has nothing to do with the penetration and
everything to do with that tattoo. It's like a lasagna of irony: on first layer, nothing says "I'm proud of my Jewish heritage and this for my Bubby who survived in the Holocaust" like a fucking Star of David tattoo. It's like putting "I love the Torah! BUT TAKE THAT, LEVITICUS 19:28!" forever on your person. On the second layer, porn stars with religious tattoos are just such fucking buzzkills. If I'm trying to get off to you doing some girl from behind, the last thing I need is a giant Star of David being repeatedly thrust in my face and reminding me that I keep meaning to google when Passover starts this year. (April 19th.) And finally on the tertiary layer, it's around his belly-button. Let me repeat that: the Star of David is around his belly-button. I mean...I don't know what the literary equivalent of a slow clap is, but I'd like to do that. Right now. Clap. Clap. Clap, clap. Clap, clap, clap, clap. Well done, sir. Well done.

I wish I could have scanned this page to get the detail on her face, but Chris wanted it to frame or laminate and carry around in his wallet and I guess I have to respect that. I'm pretty sure we're going to make this the Official Pornographic Image of 2birds1blog because neither of us can get over how perfectly that face shouts, "TAKE THE
PICTURE. I SAID, TAKE THE GOD DAMN PICTURE. I JUST SCRATCHED MYSELF AND I'M NOT DOING THIS AGAIN, SO TAKE THE GOD DAMN PICTURE" through gritted teeth. A++++

5.) I know I'm embarrassingly late to the party, but "Anacostia
—The Web Series" is the single greatest thing that has ever happened to me. I don't even remember what life was like before it. Per series creator Anthony Anderson, "I wanted to create a show that was along the lines of 'Dallas' and 'Knots Landing' with a bit of a 'Sex And The City' flair” A "Dallas"-esque show set in Anacostia? I mean...really. Why didn't I know about this until now? My new life goal is to get a walk-on role in season 3. I'm well aware that I'm a white girl from Northwest, which is sort of the antithesis of everything the show is about, but I'd be more than willing to play "Lost AU Freshman doing FSE in Congress Heights #1" and just wander around aimlessly in the background of a shot in an oversized t-shirt and a pair of khaki shorts. Mr. Anderson, I look forward to you contacting my agent (chris@2birds1blog.com). And Mr. Wil Lash, I look forward to you asking me out on a date and creating a wonderful life together. I don't know if you heard, but I finished my Gardasil series in 2009. Wink! (meg@2birds1blog.com).

TWO IMPORTANT THINGS!! THEY BOTH INVOLVE YOU!!!!1

1.) It's that time of the year again! Shameless, shameless begging time. We need you to help us win the City Paper's 2011 Reader's Poll for Best Blog! To vote for us, go here, click "31 more" under the PEOPLE & PLACES category, type "2birds1blog.com" for best local blog/blogger, scroll to the bottom, type in your email address (they won't share it, FOR REALS), and click submit! It's super easy and would really help us out. We want to win this one, you guys. We want to win this one bad. And not because we're trying to "stick it" to any of the other DC blogs, not because we haven't won any awards lately (although that's valid), but because the City Paper knows how to throw a party and frankly, I just want to go again this year. BOOM. There it is. It's not classy, but it's honest. Last year they had a shit-ton of corn dogs, funnel cakes, and drag queens. I mean, perhaps enough said?

I brought Alex and Becca to the '10 party and all three of us got significantly more drunk than we meant to. Things happened. We were collectively too scared to say hi to the BYT kids. Alex stole a giant floral centerpiece, and the visual of him hoofin' it down New York Avenue at 2 o'clock in the morning with it is something still I hold near and dear to my heart. I went out with a reader and the gossip columnist from The Washington Times afterwards and drank my weight in Steel Reserve. A few hours later I was on the 7am MegaBus to NYC with tears slowly rolling down from under a giant pair of sunglasses because the thought of not vommitting over the course of the next fours was physically and emotionally too much to handle. It was a time!

And guess what? If we win, we'll bring one of you with us as our hot date!
Photobucket
Join us at my place first for our traditional pre-event freak-out! Watch as Tulane Chris drinks everything in my apartment (from the peach Bacardi nips in my freezer to the five-year-old bottle of Manischewitz under the sink), while I spend an hour and a half cutting stickers only to forget them and freak out in the cab! Get your picture taken with us on the red carpet! Let us stuff your pockets with savory foods from the buffet! Be our lookout while we binge eat in the bathroom! Walk around the Convention Center and help us harass hookers and doormen for ecstasy, before we all just give up and go back to my place to watch Mean Girls! IT'LL BE SO AWESOME!!!!1 But again, only if we win. To enter, vote for us and forward your confirmation email to meg@2birds1blog.com. Gender is a non-issue. Out-of-towner? We'll work something out. hey HEY hey.

And now to Chris for our next item of business.

2.) Ladies and gentlemen, the following announcements will be made according to the rules of the ancient Japanese art of FAQ.

Q: What are you doing this summer?

A: Hiring our first 2Birds1Blog Summer Intern.

Q: Are you fucking kidding me?

A: No. We’re really going to have a summer intern.

Q: Is this like… a weird sex thing?

A: No. It’s like a weird “we want someone to help with administrative tasks so we can concentrate on writing the blog this summer” thing.

Q: Does this internship just entail making sure there’s always enough sweet tea vodka and Wawa lemonade in the fridge at all times so that Chris never need be without an “adult” Arnold Palmer?

A: Not “just,” although that is important. Basically, we need someone to do the following:

- Fill merchandise orders when we restock the store in a few weeks.
- Help with event planning for The Misanthrope’s Guide to Life launch party and publicity events, as well as for some more in-depth, on-location 2Birds Investigates we plan to do this summer.
- Do research and fact-finding for some projects we’re considering launching, but need more information about before we announce them.
- Help us produce advertising and publicity materials.
- Keep track of all the paperwork in a large, clearly labeled binder, instead of my previous, “oh, it’s under the… is that an armoire or a chiffarobe? What’s the difference? Anyway, behind that pile of Mountain Dew Red Alert cans” filing system.

If you’re big on labels, it’s a hybrid administration/marketing internship.

Q: Is this a paid internship?

A: You’re cute, pumpkin. Never lose that childlike idealism. No.

Q: Can I do this for school credit?

A: That depends on your school, but we will do our best to make it possible. While it will hopefully be fun – Meg and I are delightfully zany fledgling comedy writers – the projects you’ll be working on are serious, and you will be getting experience doing various “business” things. If you need us to talk or email with your advisor or supervisor to reassure them that this is a xX FoR rEaLs Xx internship, we will.

Q: How tall must I be to ride, and junk?

A: Well, for various reasons, including and limited to the fact that Meg and I sometimes take “porn breaks” during writing sessions to refresh ourselves, you should probably be 18. 21 would be nice so you can run to the liquor store for us, but it’s not a requirement.

You need to be in Philly or DC or their commutable hinterlands this summer. You’ll be able to do some of the work from home, but we (or at least one of us) will need to meet with you at least once or twice a week, and you’ll need to be able to come in to process the merchandise. Without getting very specific, Meg lives in Dupont in DC and Chris lives near-ish Rittenhouse Square in Philadelphia, so think about if that’s commutable for you. As far as scheduling goes, we know you have work n’ junk, and we’re willing to be flexible in scheduling, but there’s not going to be any early-morning shit if we can avoid it, because Meg and I are both essentially nocturnal.

A marketing/business background would be nice, since we don’t have that, but we’ll consider liberal arts faggots like ourselves if they put in good applications.

Q: How do I apply?

A: Hahahaha. SEND A RESUME AND A COVER LETTER to applications@2birds1blog.com. Don’t send us the same bullshit cover letter we all send about how this internship will “empower you to build on your dreams to achieve career-oriented goal solutions,” just tell us why you’d be good for the job. [Ed. Note: I don't care if you write a cover letter or not, based on principle. Chris might look down on you if you don't, but I might respect you more. It's a delicate dance, this Intern thing.]

Q: I’m a half-black, half-Eskimo bisexual polyamorous Wiccan with a parasitic twin that has Tourette’s. Can I still apply?

A: PLEASE DO. We don’t discriminate against any of those “race, creed, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, level of ability, allergic to salt” protected categories listed on the bus. We will, however, discriminate against haters and squares.

Q: When?

A: Apply by MARCH 31. Don’t “Yang out” and turn your shit in late with a lot of misspelled bad sex and racism. We’ll put it up on the website and you’ll achieve a little notoriety, but you won’t get hired. We’ll work with you on the start date for the internship, but plan for mid-to-late May.

Q: If I have any questions, can I email you?

A: Yes, but use the meg@ and chris@ addresses. We probably won’t check the application email address until we start looking through the applications.

Q: This is awesome!

A: Word.

Dicks All Over the Floor and Red Lobster: Foiling Search Engines in One Post

Giant Camel has moved back in, and has begun making collages out of construction paper and dirty magazines. In practical terms, this means that the floor of the apartment is covered in little cut-out pictures of dicks. I keep being afraid I’ll scoop one into my bag and take it to school, and then I’ll take my notebook out and one will gracefully spiral down to the ground, in front of God, the dean, and everybody…

So, the other night, I was hanging out with a friend of mine, who mentioned casually that he’d rather be smeared with honey and left out for army ants than go to his high school reunion. “It’s this year, you know.”

GUUUUH. That means mine is in three years. (See, I’m still 23, but my high school has them every eight years because of... oh, I don’t know. Pick something. Climate change. “Metric decades.”)

Now, I had a Meg-like bad time in middle school. Being weird and surrounded by thirteen-year-olds is, no raspberries, the worst thing that can happen to a person. We’ve dwelt with that theme often on this blog, and doubtless will again, so I won’t go into it here except to tell all you youngsters looking for your “trademark” not to adopt a fake English accent in the sixth grade. It won’t end well.

By contrast, I had the whizz of a time in high school. I thought I got away with a lot of stuff, but in retrospect I just had low standards of what was badass: “Totally getting migas” instead of going to a first period elective isn’t hardcore by most standards, but I thought it was cool. Anyway, even though high school was a lot of fun, I’ve been planning what delightfully zany thing I was going to do at the reunion since I was about sixteen. (“No, it’s totally going to be like Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, except we’ll get away with it. Also beer.”) Over the intervening ten oh dear God I’m never going to win a Fields medal seven years, I’ve considered the following delightfully zany reunion antics:

- Have sex with James van Dyne, the handsome and promiscuous soccer star I had a crush on in tenth grade (supposedly he totally got laid in the bathroom in middle school, which sounded pretty rad at the time – anything remotely sexual plays well to junior-high audiences – but which now strikes me as deeply, almost supernaturally depressing. Two fourteen-year-olds “coupling” for under a minute in a cinderblock, chronically underfunded public middle school bathroom. It’s what you’d expect if Sam Sheppard directed child pornography.)

- Fake a tig ol’ heroin addiction, complete with cold sweats and Magic Marker track marks. I don’t know what the end game is for this, really, except maybe seeing now much money I can make from former classmates who give me a sad smile and press a twenty into my palm.

- “Just show up all rich and shit.” It’s a classic for a reason.

- Get drunk enough to open up and let my opinions have a jolly little time running free (a.k.a. “Chris’s This-Wedding-Sucks Default”)

- Send a false report that I’ve died, then show up at the next reunion a-OK. “I thought it was rabies, but it turns out it was a bad Boone’s Farm hangover. Boy, was my face red.”

None of these are very good. I feel like they’re all intro-level wacky, the kind of party themes a slightly bitchier than average Junior League would think up if everyone was tired of Mardi Gras Mambo. I don’t want to just go, hug everyone, have four Tom Collinses, look at baby pictures, then go back to my hotel room and watch “Touched by an Angel.” Except for the baby pictures, that’s almost exactly what Meg and I did on our ill-fated business trip to Newport News. (We finance the blog by secret-shopping Red Lobster restaurants and making sure the biscuits are “just cheesy enough.” Our turf is Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, both Virginias and DC, so if you see two “artistic types” going to town on a pound of crab legs on your next big date, it’s probably us. Don’t say hello or you’ll blow our cover, but email where you saw us and we’ll send you a coupon.)

(No, not really. I just got comfortable in that Red Lobster joke and decided to stay a while.)

This whole thing is kind of a made-up problem, anyway, since my high school theatre program has a reunion on or near Thanksgiving every year, to which I have never been invited. I showed up on the “Can’t find these kids, LOL!” list one year – 2005, when I was genuinely hard to track down – but since then I’ve never been invited. Several people have said “oh, you should have come!” but… shit. Hanging out reminiscing about our mostly-white theatre department’s production of The Wiz is weird enough, but to crash a party to do so? I can’t quite get behind that. I almost just sacked up and went last year to brag about THE BOOK, but we weren’t completely sure we’d gotten the deal yet, and somehow I wasn’t all that inspired by the idea of going up to the high school and saying, “Yeah, I gained some weight, but me and this girl are writing a book about being unpleasant! So there! You thought you were such hot shit because you got cast as the Elephant Man and not me! WHO’S THE ELEPHANT MAN NOW, JACKASS!”

Haha! I just remembered the guy who actually did beat me for that part. He was 80 kinds of nuts. Zander (yeah, really) loved the movie Cruel Intentions and actively patterned his behavior after the Ryan Philippe character, which he was, to put it gently, way too ugly to get away with. He had a “notebook” in which he kept “secrets” about everyone in the theatre department and notes on how he plotted their downfall. We were sophomore theatre students in a high school in central Texas that would later almost be closed under “No Child Left Behind.” That is a fucking deep hole, ladies and gentlemen, and here he was with a shovel, just digging away…Anyway, I found out what his entry about me said. I skipped the theatre white-elephant-game Christmas party to go watch a movie, prompting him to write: “Chris didn’t take my Karate Elvis action figure to the Christmas party. He will pay.” I did not pay, as it turns out. Remembering Zander has, though, helped me make up my mind: I’m never going to one of those reunions. Nothing could ever top “Chris didn’t take my Karate Elvis action figure to the party. He will pay,” and it would be wrong to try.

I'M ALIVE! SO ALIVE!

Just dropping in to clarify that I haven't been MIA because I died of Salmonella poisoning (HEY-OHHHHH—SMALL VICTORIES!!!!); we're working for The Man this week. For it is The Man who keeps us in house dresses and Kendall-Jackson Chardonnay. Oh, and Lexie Briggs, who donated yet AGAIN this week. God I love that woman. The Man and Lexie Briggs—ideal co-pilots for a fantasy naked hot tub party??? Don't mind if I do, and don't mind if I do. (Let it be known I was about to make an unbelievably nauseating skimmer joke right there but managed to edit myself. You're welcome.)

Alright, momma's gonna go make some money, b
ut I'll be back. And I have a shit-ton of half-written posts hanging out on my desktop, so hopefully not only will I be back, but I'll be coming. In your faces. With posts. Good. Glad you went there with me on that one. I leave you now two quick yummies and a quick reminder to follow us on Twitter because I'll be in Philly for the rest of the week and weekend working with Chris, and Meg/Chris work sessions tend to produce a lot of unfortunate tweeting about "The Price is Right" and scissoring. Not necessarily in that order. KBYE.

1.) I was pokin' around my parent's basement last week and found my COMPLETE COLLECTION OF AMERICAN GIRL TRADING CARDS IN THE OFFICIAL COLLECTIBLE BINDER. No big deal. No big fuckin' mint-condition deal. Anyway, I was flipping through the binder and reminiscing and feeling warm and fuzzy when
this card caught my eye:

Does that, or does that not look like the official trading card for 18th Century Molestation? And what does it say about me that if there were such a thing as century specific molestation trading cards, I would pay whatever it takes to get the circa Industrial Revolution one because I have a thing for fingerless gloves and "Spinning Jenny" wordplay?

2.) Meglet and Monty. Eatin' raisins. Looking uncomfortably Asian. And
rull tired. 4 lyfe.
